Fitness Friday - tip #4 portion sizes

Friday, March 5, 2010

Here is another installment of tips and tricks to losing weight and keeping it off, the healthy and long term way Remember the previous weeks tips:
and this weeks tip is #4 PORTION SIZES

One of the things that sends any dieter into a frenzy is the idea of weighing and measuring food. Unfortunately this is something that is often necessary for the average person returning to a healthy lifestyle as our Western diet is totally out of whack with portion sizes! For instance a portion of pasta is 3/4 cup or grams. A serving of animal protein should be 4oz or the size of a deck of cards. A serving size of potato or other vegetables is the size of your fist. Think about all that for a second. We see quarter pounders all the time (4oz) but how many times do we see those quarter pounder burgers with bacon AND cheese? That's two-three servings of protein right there! Never mind those 12-16oz steaks, humongous baked potatoes and potato salad that covers half your plate. The Western diet has portion distortion, and it's adding to the obesity epidemic with it's all you can eat buffets, and bottomless drinks.

Conversely the Western diet has the opposite problem when it comes to vegetables. Portion sizes are scant, and usually consist of peas or side salad (iceberg lettuce with 3 slices of cucumber and a cherry tomato). Then to add insult to injury these vegetables are usually covered in high fat, calorie laden sauces. No wonder obesity is on the rise!

So stop and think about portion size next time you sit down to eat. Are you really having ONE portion, or two? three? four? More? Read the nutrition labels and educate yourself, and read CLOSELY because sometimes it can be cunningly deceiving. Take this cookie label below

See the calories per portion size? 244 Cals, for a large cookie (it was around 4-5" in diameter) that's still pretty high but look again at the label. That cookie is TWO servings! Making the calorie total for ONE WHOLE COOKIE nearly 500 calories! INSANE! I personally would have to workout for over an hour to burn off the calories in that cookie, that is just crazy. Plus who eats HALF a cookie? Me that's who! Especially once I saw the calories on this sucker!

Ways to control portion sizes

Scales - a small set of kitchen scales are a great addition to any healthy person's arsenal. Keep them handy in a drawer, or on the counter and you'll be sure to use them. Weigh out items you are unsure of, and really see what a portion size of cereal looks like! I can almost guarantee that almost everyone will be eating more than one standard portion if you are just pouring cereal into a bowl! I love the scales with glass bowls or plates incorporated into their design but for our household that just isn't a safe option. Frankly we haven't had a full glassware set for years, I'm clumsy and glass just doesn't last long in our house so no way I was investing in a kitchen scale with glass,. Instead we opted for a Plain but functional Electronic Kitchen Scale like this one on Amazon. Plus it's easier to store!

Measuring cups - these are extremely popular in the US and a great quick and easy way to measure out your portion sizes. Usually they come in sets like this one above with sizes ranging from 1/4 cup to 1 cup. We have multiple sets in our kitchen as these are used a LOT in our house, even now I think we could do with another set or two. Usually we leave a cup in the cereal, nuts and anything else we use frequently. The great thing about these is they are cheap at around $1.50 per set! Easily in anyone's budget!

Over the course of the next week, educate yourself about portion sizes, and be mindful not only of what you are eating and HOW MUCH you are eating!

Just Cards! - Birthdays!

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Every so often Just Cards Magazine puts out a special issue of either invitations, birthdays, holidays etc and the current special edition is available which is Birthdays! 300+ birthday cards packed into one special issue. All the cards have step by step instructions too so you can recreate the design at home! Awesome! I have three cards in this special issue :)

The card above is one I made using Boxer Scrapbooks products. I am LOVING the turquoise polka dot paper! If you read the blog often you'll know I LOVE LOVE LOVE dotty papers!!! Plus Boxer just released a pink dotty paper so I am happy as a lark! Still love the black and white the best though ;)

The card above is one I made a while ago for my blog and decided to send off to the magazine cos I loved it so much. I love those acetate flowers from Queen & Co. Just a quick card using some leftover papers but when you coordinate papers with ribbons and embellishments the results can be great!

Whilst making the 2nd card I made this one using the same papers but instead embellished with some Prima floral trim. Weirdly the epoxy on this card was by a completely different manufacturer but it matched the paper perfectly. Love it when that happens.

So if you like birthday cards, check out the special edition of Just Cards Magazine!

Scrapbooking.com March

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

This month at Scrapbooking.com my article is all about the sanding technique. I love sanding and with cardstock from companies like DCWV and Core-dinations sanding is making a huge impact on the latest and greatest scrapbook layouts! Having different colored core or just exposing that white inner core makes a huge difference on any page! This is my layout from the current article but the whole article can be viewed online at Scrapbooking.com along with many other great articles from the design team and from readers alike!

I just love this photo of Sky, so freakin' cute! Also loving the paper kits from Pebbles Inc! Awesome kits! The background for this layout is core-dinations cardstock too so lots of color revealed IRL, not so easy to see in a scan really, ah well! Another layout done for the doggy album!

Round-Up February

Monday, March 1, 2010

It's Round-Up time again! As per usual rules here are my answers to the questions for the month of February :)

What books and/or magazines did I read this month?
Read and re read my AFAA kickboxing manual and study guide. Other than that exciting things like re-reading my manuals for sewing machine and serger. Oh and American Fitness magazines for the past few months :) Catching up. I also bought Fitness Rx (for women) mag, though I haven't read it all through I did read a couple of the articles so I guess that counts? I've been looking for GOOD fitness magazines, so far not really coming up with anything that great. I like Fitness Rx, so I may subscribe to that. If anyone has any suggestions please post a comment!

What movies and/or tv shows did I watch this month?
We've gotten into Dexter. Having no tv service we were pretty unaware of this series but it came recommended to we bit the bullet and watched a few episodes of season 1 and are enjoying it. We're watching some British tv as always too :)

What special days did I celebrate and how?
February 14th was valentines day and honestly we don't celebrate it at all. It's a pretty over-commercialized holiday and we prefer to celebrate dates that mean something to US as a couple rather than every couple on the planet.

What illnesses or health concerns did I have?
None really, though I felt a little sick yesterday morning. I think that was a combination of too much food Friday night and too much tea Saturday morning. I don't normally drink tea in the morning and I had two big cups. Weird how things like that affect you when you aren't used to them.

What fun things did I do with my friends and/or family?
Lots of meals out this month! We went out for dinner with a few of our friends, most recently it was Dan and Kass celebrating Kass getting a job at Disney :) Yay go Kass!!!

What new foods, recipes or restaurants did I try this month?
Tried a new vegetable curry from somewhere in No Ho, wasn't that great. Sure a healthier option than Shahi Paneer or something, but I'd have preferred a channa or something instead I think. I'd much rather have a smaller portion of something delicious than a regular portion of something blah. Maybe I just wasn't in a curry mood? Hahahaha!

Veggie Grill - awesome food! Loved the All-American Stack and V-cheese burger! Really good food that is vegan and no-one would ever know it! Fantastic! Check them out online for various locations in Southern California. The vegan 'steaky' strips and the

Daiya Cheese - great vegan cheese that tastes just like regular Dairy cheese. Excellent melted too! We bought both the italian and cheddar varieties already pre-grated in the tubs at Whole foods. Though it is pretty pricey at $9.99 per lb, it's worth it for any vegetarian. We also bought some regular vegetarian cheeses which we'll be trying later in March.

Being vegetarian we like to try the new foods coming out and this month we tried the Trader Joes Stuffed chicken-less cutlets. These were chicken-style kievs with a pocket of black beans and corn in a tomato sauce. After purchasing these I noticed the same item in Gardein brand, same item so probably just repackaged and sold as Trader Joes own. Not sure if they are cheaper at TJ's than the Gardein but worth checking out. I like the Gardein stuff cos it's low fat and low calorie for a high protein punch. Taste wise, not that great but would be ok occasionally. Gardein seems to be a chewy/rubbery chicken-free product. We have a couple more of their products to try soon.

Field Roast Italian Sausage - I love Tofukey sun dried tomato sausages, and though I've tried various other veggie/vegan sausage none have taken the place of the tofurkey sausage and unfortunately this italian sausage by Field Roast is no contender either. The have the strong taste from the fennel in them which is the same complaint I had with the Trader Joe's own vegetarian Italian sausage. I'm not a fan of fennel in my sausage. I am eager to try out the other two varieties we picked up though and the roast!

Update: Ok quick update today. We tried the Field Roast Smoked Sausage with Apple and Sage  and OMG totally freaking delish! Reminds me of a fake meat we used to get at Morrissons in England. Loving this one, kinda the only veggie sausage that reminds me of real sausage. Not sure that's 100% true though cos I haven't had real meat sausage in almost 20 years! lol!

We bought a whole host of stuff from Whole foods recently that we plan on trying so lots of details on those products soon.

What special or unusual purchases did I make?
LAPTOP! Oh how I missed not having a laptop. My old one decided to leap off the sofa in a suicide mission and promptly killed the screen backlight. It was heavy and bulky and getting a new laptop had been on my "things to look at buying" list for a while but this incident brought the purchase forward. We didn't rush into it though, I went for about 6 months with no laptop whilst researching what I wanted, and then prices :) In the end I got a HP pavilion dm3 1130us from Amazon. I've had it a couple of weeks now and am loving it! I don't use it much except in the evenings and weekends, which is when I am preparing most of my blog posts these days (including this one!). Oh how I missed not having a laptop to work on! Loving this laptop! Plus it has a built in camera so will be great for chatting on Skype when Bob goes away on a conference next month :)

This month I also bought some boxing gloves to use in my kickboxing classes. Although you get a great workout shadow boxing you need gloves to use the bags, and often at our gym there aren't enough gloves. Plus other people use them so we have to put on plastic gloves for protection from other peoples sweaty hands (eeewww). These are great gloves though! Definitely recommend them for kickboxing. These are weighted 12oz, velcro fasten and fit my hands perfectly (good size for women). My only complaint is they make my arms look really thin! lol!

What were this month’s disappointments?
Can't think of any other than the group fitness director leaving at the gym I started working at. She's a great woman and I really liked her, but I guess that's the nature of the business and she found another position. Good luck Suzie!

What were my accomplishments this month?
Took over Nikki's Wednesday morning kickboxing class while she goes on maternity leave, and subbed a few classes too this month. Really wanting to get some experience again before I apply at other gyms so I am happy to be asked to sub and teach. Even if it's just once or twice a week :)

Anything else noteworthy to record?
Saturday 13th February I went on an AFAA kickboxing certification course,  super fun and the first 'learning' course I've done for a long while. The day was a mix of theory and practical, with a written and practical exam components to it. At the end of the day I was completely exhausted though as I am just unused to taking in that much information in one day, really great day though! It definitely got me hooked on learning again. I used to attend lots of fitness conventions, workshops and masterclasses back in England so it was good to get back in the swing of things.

Self portrait for the month
Gonna be late camera battery dead, so it's now charging! *sigh* Need to keep up with these, I have two but just forget to put the dang things on charge!

Saturday Sewing inspiration

Saturday, February 27, 2010

I love Craftster, I especially love the reconstructed clothes section of their community. I love second hand or thrifted clothes, and especially seeing people take oversize or old items and make something absolutely glorious out of them! Today I thought I'd do a little inspiration post because honestly after checking out a few of the latest projects on there I feel totally inspired to set aside my current working project and switch to one of these fun refashions!

1 - Bikini from mens plaid shirt by Appleshannon. How awesome is this? I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! I can totally see myself in this for the upcoming swim season!

2 - Bikini from T-shirt by Appleshannon. Ok it's another bikini but I think I am in the Summer swing, ironic considering we are in the midst of a thunderstorm here right now, I could use a little Sunshine today! What I love about this one is the skull print Tee she used! So AWESOME!

3 -Tnbc, muse & the used t-shirt reconstructions by Maraleopard. What's not to love? I don't think I could pull this off anymore at my age, but I LOVE it so! Not totally 100% about the ruffley ra-ra skirt part but I think it goes with the overall look of the dress. I imagine it paired with a honking huge pair of totally rad boots!

4 - its kinda too cold for tshirts, yah? by jilltheimpossible. I love tees and hoodies, there I said it! And I love all the hoodies I see on Craftster refashioned from graphic tees and leftover  jersey, or overside hoodies refashioned. Of the recent ones lately I love this...

5 - XL mens shirt to punup halter dress by justaduck. Yep this is from a regular mens button up shirt! I wouldn't really call it a dress at my age, maybe some leggings or just shorten it a little for a cute Summer top. Great idea though right? Also on Craftster the posters sometimes do tutorials for the items they reconstruct and this one has a little tutorial up for it.

Bonus - Skeletal undies by Stellacheri. I was gonna leave this post at 5 but had to include these. OMG I so love these! I'm not sure if its the skeleton graphic I like or the colors? The green would look horrid on me but I don't care :) Great project! I also seem to have shifted from my usual thongs to boy shorts, I blame the sale at Victoria's Secret back in December. I bought about 12 pairs but it never seems to be enough :)

Aside from these I love looking at Craftster to see what people have made from their old tee shirts (a popular project) and also to gain inspiration for other projects. I've said before that I'm not the best at sewing, I try though, but some of the Craftster crowd are sewing these BY HAND people!!!

What fashion sites inspire you? Care to share some of your sewing inspiration? I am looking for projects for Summer including shorts, tops and swimwear :) I'm definitely more of a comfort over fashion kinda gal but I made exceptions for special occasions! I'd also love to make some one of kind sports clothing for my classes! Let's share!
