Manufacturer Monday - Autumn Leaves

Monday, February 8, 2010

Last week I mentioned that I had cleaned up my scrap table and found these papers to use by Autumn Leaves and I'd be sharing those this week. I have always loved these floral papers and when I love something I tend to hoard it. I know I know, come on, we all do it. I think the hoarding part is just something scrapbookers do! Anyway after deciding to USE my stash instead I am on a mission to create, create, create!

 Supplies: Cardstock: DCWV; Paper & Die Cut: Autumn Leaves; Rub-on: one heart... one mind; Rhinestone: Sulyn;

The card above, the die cut flower was printed on a circle, but I really didn't like the color combo and it was too big for the overall card design. So I took some scissors to the die cut and make it a more 3D embellishment. Just goes to show you don't need to leave die cuts 'as is', make them your own!

I am so into using every last scrap of cardstock, that this piece of brown cardstock was a tiny strip left over from a previous card. When I'm creating I save all the scraps in a pile and sift through to find anything that I can use instead of cutting into a fresh sheet. Really saves $$

More cards soon!

Etsy Store

Sunday, February 7, 2010

Finally got around to opening up an Etsy store in December, and to show how busy I've been lately I only just managed to find time time to add some products! Hoping this weekend to sort through my stash of cards and list some more in my Etsy store, I have a ton of greeting cards on hand here so I just need to take some time and sort through them.

In the Etsy store I plan on selling handmade cards featured on the blog, card PDFs files you can print at home and hopefully some sewn items. The store is pretty bare bones right now, I am in the process of making a banner and making it look all pretty, but until then bear with the standard text display etc.

Boxer layouts - dog papers

Saturday, February 6, 2010

If you've paid close attention to the Boxer blog over the past few years, you'll know that I absolutely ADORE the doggy papers! They were what drew me to Boxer, made me apply for the Design Team and honestly I could scrap forever with their doggy papers :) I love scrapping my dogs but for this layout I decided to scrap a page for a friend, and specifically her dog Guido.

This page features both new and old dog products, again Boxer going the extra mile to update those older papers by coordinating them to the newer papers! Awesome! Here is the new Bone paper with the older woof words and woof stripes paper. Also on this page is part of the new new dog transparency!

The layout is completed with bone ribbon, brads, metal embellishments, alphabet stickers and dog bone charm all from Boxer! I also used the stitching ruler for the hand stitching.

On the layout below I combined those same papers, new bone paper, woof words and woof stripes, with the new dog transparency and a photo of one of my furbabies. This is Sky :)

Also on this layout are ric rac, grosgrain ribbon, brads and a metal rim tag. Love how everything coordinates down to the exact color match!

More projects soon!

Fit Friday - tips n tricks #2

Friday, February 5, 2010

Bob is on a weight loss journey. He's done it before, losing over 100lbs but slowly and surely the weight crept back on, as it does for most people and he's found himself overweight again. I mention this because there are many many fad diets, crazy schemes and all round weirdness in the diet and exercise world that it's hard to pick out the good information from the bad. With that said I thought I'd share some tips and tricks over the upcoming weeks/months related to diet and fitness that should help in your quest to getting healthy and trim. Since implementing some of these tips Bob has dropped over 10lbs and I hope that I will soon have my healthy husband back :)

I already mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but Tip #1 is WATER. Seriously soda and coffee etc are NOT the same! Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Again there is the general rule of thumb of 8 x8oz glasses of water a day rule. Another way to measure your daily water requirement is to take your weight in lbs and divide it by two. So for a 150lb person, their water intake should be around 75fl oz. If you live in a hot climate you'll need more as you lose water through perspiration, same if you are exercising.

Tip #2 - Know your numbers.
If your goal is to lose weight then knowledge is the key, and losing weight is basically math (groan) and science. To lose weight we must create a calorie deficit. What we mean by that is that we have to consume LESS than than we expend. So basically we must eat less than we exercise. To do this we first need to know how many calories we should be consuming right? Sure we could get all technical and work it out ourselves, but I never did like math ;) Personally if I want to know my numbers I use Livestrong.com who calculate everything for me :) After signing up on their site, go to "My Plate" then "my calorie goals". Here you will see a form like the one below

First enter the information required:
  • Age
  • Height
  • Current weight
  • Goal - choose maintain weight here so we know our maintenance figure (we'll come back to livestrong later)***
  • Now the activity level  - I select is light because I add my exercise on a daily basis depending on how much exercise I do. I prefer this because my calorie burn via exercise varies a great deal day to day according to the type and duration of exercise I am doing.  If you don't want to track your exercise daily then you can also pick moderate, very and highly active, choose one that works best for you.

As you can see from my data the calorie requirement for me to maintain my current weight/lifestyle is 1807 calories a day.

Great so now I have a baseline figure what next? So let's say I wanted to lose weight (I don't but hey for kicks and giggles we'll go with it) at 123 lbs I'd want to lose no more than 1lb a week. Remember weight loss goals should be 1% of your current body weight each week. For each 1lb you want to loose the weekly deficit needs to be 3500 calories, or 500 calories a day. So 2lbs a week would be 7000 calories or 1000 calories a day, etc etc. It's math but it's easy math :) again here is the magic number:
  • 1lb = 3500 calories

So now how to get that deficit? Well naturally through diet or exercise and ideally a mixture of both. What I really like about Livestrong is that it does ALL the math for you. ***If instead of entering a goal of "maintain weight" we enter "lose 1lb a week", it automatically reduces my calorie intake by 500 cals, you can see below that my daily calorie intake is now suggested at 1307 to lose 1lb a week.

If you want to get a thorough understanding of your numbers, goals, and tracking of diet/exercise Livestrong.com is a great resource. You can also track your water intake, and there is a great iPhone app for entering information on the go. Either way KNOW YOUR NUMBERS is essential to losing weight the healthy way and long term.

Card sketch February #1

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Argh day late and dollar short this week! Had a tough time this week with my schedule, teaching classes, working out myself, then had lunch with some girlfriends and basically just exhausted yesterday when I got home so I forgot to post on the blog! Yikes!

Anyway, this month I am taking a break from new sketches and revisiting some older sketches. Gives me a chance to recharge my creative batteries and make some changes in March ;)  Plus it will give me chance to get ahead again! lol!  For this month I decided to use some older sketches and give them a little pep. Remember to check my digital store for limited time freebies!

When making this card I knew I wanted to use the paper design as part of the embellishment but I added an acetate flower overlay in the corner to balance out the design. Also the ribbon was felted and quite heavy so a bow was going to add LOTS of dimension, instead I opted for a die cut and button.

Supplies: Papers & Die Cut: Autumn Leaves; Button: Bazzill; Rub-on: one heart... one mind; Ribbon: Cosmo Cricket; Acetate flower: Heidi Swapp

Revisiting some more previous sketches every Wednesday this month! Stay tuned

Manufacturer Monday - Autumn Leaves

Monday, February 1, 2010

I used Autumn Leaves a few months ago but had a few partial sheets leftover that I planned on using up, so I left them on my scraptable, but with tradeshow projects, article deadlines and other fun stuff they kinda got buried under a pile of new products. Over the weekend I tried to regain some semblance of order in my office though and found the Autumn Leaves papers all lonely under a pile and decided to take a little time out my weekend and CREATE! I made 9 cards in all which I will be sharing over the upcoming weeks. 3 will be used on Sketch Wednesdays but the other 6 I'll be sharing over the next three weeks.

Supplies: Cardstock: DCWV; Paper & Die Cut: Autumn Leaves; Rub-on: one heart... one mind; Flower: Heidi Swap

For these cards I just let myself create, play, and let the cards design themselves. I just used basic designs adding emphasis with sanding, inking, and embellishments.  It was also my intention to use older product along with the Autumn Leaves papers, so some old Heidi Swapp acetate flowers, old one heart... one mind rub-ons etc. I am DONE hoarding product!

Supplies: Cardstock: DCWV; Paper: Autumn Leaves; Die Cut: Sizzix; Rub-on: one heart... one mind; Flower: Heidi Swap

More cards to share soon!
