Photo-a-day during October

Monday, September 25, 2006

So its on! I'm doing a self-imposed photo a day challenge for October. The goal is to make me get out and take more photo's! I also plan on scrapping them into a mini-album. I realised that I go through spurts of photo taking, much like most things. Its all or nothing for me! So I'm posting the challenge for Treasures To Scrap during October. Giving suggestions/ideas for Octobers photo opportunities. I also really want to get out to LA Zoo again soon. Haven't been since I got the Lumis (over a year now) and I want some zoo shots. Maybe I can coax Bob into going with me :) I can't beleive its nearly October! 1 week! Where does the time go? October brings lots of things! First its the girls Barkday! Adopted them 4 years ago on the 14th. Halloween naturally brings lots of celebration. I bought a plastic tablecloth from Target dollarspot today, gonna use it as a backdrop for the halloween photo's! Speaking of which... have you SEEN the pet costumes in Target? OMG too cute! Loving the batman and robin, and the Yoda costume was hilarious! Saw the bee one today and the fire hydrant! Love the pet stuff there! So there you have it lots of photo's coming in October!

In other news I'm stalking the mailman for my Crafty Keepsakes October kit. Looks awesome! With Gin X and Urban lily papers! YUMMY!

Treasures to Scrap Digi Sponsor - Lori Barnhurst

Sunday, September 24, 2006

Our sponsor for September is Lori Barnhurst. I shared some projects earlier this month with her Natural Chick kit, this is "Orphan Boy". Hands down this it my very favorite kit EVER! I love everything. I'll admit that I struggled a little with the pink natural chick kit, but this orphan boy kit just calls me each time I go to digi scrap! I've used it a lot recently. Don't be fooled by the title either, its very versatile! Anyway here are two pages I did with the kit, love them both!
For more projects featuring Lori Barnhursts kit see our sponsor gallery at Treasures to Scrap

last upload for Scrap that Moment DT call!

Friday, September 15, 2006

Today is "All about me!" day for the Scrap that Moment DT showcase. I did two layouts for today. The first is about me and how far I've come, how I've grown. The style of the page is still very me, minimal embellishments and graphic/clean. Supplies:- cardstock: DCWV; PP: Basic Grey; alpha: Heidi Swapp; metal embellishments: Joanns; Font: Bitstream vera sans. I should add my Mum took the photo :) thanks Mum
The layout below "Never Alone" is one I did about me and my dogs. The photo is of me trying to get a decent self portrait, and failing! See with dogs you are never alone, they are always there. My two are especially sentsitive to my feelings. Sky decided that Mummy playing with the camera and sitting on the camping chair was the right time for a face wash! Love them both to bits! Supplies:- Cardstock: DCWV; PP: Basic Grey; Photo corners: 3L; pen: sharpie; font: bitstream vera sans; metal embellishments: Joanns
Now the tough part of the DT call comes... the waiting. There are only 2 spots open so the competition is fierce! Some great great work by some very talented ladies! Whatever happens, whether I get picked or not, I have a bunch of layouts I love! And I've gotten to know a great bunch of ladies in the process!

More scrap that moment!

Thursday, September 14, 2006

So its day four of the upload week for the Design Team call at Scrap That Moment. Today is "showcase your style". When I sat and thought about it I wasn't sure I had a style, but I definately think its been evolving over the last couple of months. So this "Lani" layout reflects my style: Simple, graphic, linear, clean. Supplies:- Cardstock: Bazzill; PP: Imagination project (chloes closet); Alpha: MM; brads: MM; ribbon: may arts; Ribbon slide: maya road; font: bitstream vera sans. Love the photo! Took it in August at the park, totally Lani!

This "Graumans" layout was for day three "stamping". I'd had this pics printed off a while, for a challenge I never got round to. And they just popped out at me. I knew I had the asian stamps too and the colors just came out from the photo. Totally love it! The background is all stamped and some stamping inside. The photo flips out as you can see on the next photo. Supplies:- carstock: DCWV; gold paper and vellum: paper co; title done with craft robo font is Shanghai; brads: lifes journey; stamps: all night media;

Oh and in other news I got the blackberry buckets kit yesterday! Awesome papers from We R Memory Keepers! Beautiful! Looking forward to getting stuck into scrapping those!!!

That Design Team!

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Sharing a couple of layouts I submitted to the That Design Team call I would TOTALLY love to be on this design team! If it works out then great! If not I have 5 layouts I love! I will admit that I was totally gonna bail on Monday morning just because I made the mistake of looking in the gallery first before I uploaded mine. BUT I didn't I carried on uploading, 'cos you never know what kind of style that Lynette is looking for.

The first layout "Safe" is for the "Showcase your handwriting" challenge. Anyone who knows me knows I hate my handwriting BUT I am learning to accept it for what it is and work with it. Supplies:- pp: Scenic route; cardstock: bazzill; alpha: pressed petals (all from crafty keepsakes Sept kit); Brads: MM; The journalling tells of our struggle last year with the wildfires around our neighborhood.

This layout "Carefree" is for the "photography showcase" challenge. I had a hard time narrowing down the choices but in the end I went with these photo's of Lucas that I took last month at the local park. He is so photogenic I really want to get out and get more pics taken of Rob and Eliza's kids. Anyway not much in the way of journalling on this one, not much to say when its not your kid, but the layout is totally my style and I love it. Supplies:- cardstock: bazzill & DCWV; pp: crate; alpha: heidi swapp; photo corners: 3L; white pen: american crafts; brads & photo anchor: Joanns; ribbon: offray; blue pen: sharpie; breadtag: chez hickman (lol); technique: stitching

If I have learnt anything over the last couple of days its to stay true to my style. I didn't even think I had a style, but I do. I'm definately a simple; graphic; clean; linear; scrapper. I like clean lines, and uncluttered pages. Less is definately more for me! I looked through my gallery and I also do a lot of one word titles. I guess what is really happening is I'm growing a lot during this challenge, defining my style and heck I'm even handjournalling! Growing and totally loving it!

Studio Friday - tools of the trade

Friday, September 8, 2006

Studio Friday this week is "tools of the trade". I took some photo's of my tools. My craft robo, foam stamps, inks, rubber stamps, adhesives, pens, scissors etc. All tools I use in any typical week. Naturally the most used tool I'd say is my computer! Couldn't manage anything without that.

Crafty Keepsakes September Kit

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

Sharing another project made with the September Crafty Keepsakes kit. This is an altered photo album from the dollarstore. I hope to get the inside done this month. The idea came from fellow DT member Angel (Babydoll) who had posted a journal for her 'to-do' in the house list. I had wanted somewhere to put my inspiration for the house/garden and this is it. The inside white pages have existing frames to slot photo's in. I plan on putting large pull out tags in (with tabs) for each area, and possibly a before and after photo.

You know what's strange? I loved the 3 bugs papers in this kit, yet I've used the scenic route papers more! Weird! I never saw myself as a scenic route scrapper yet here I am using it alot lately! I am working on some cards next using this kit, any hopefully more layouts.

September digital Sponsor at Treasures to Scrap - kit #1

This months digital sponsor at Treasures to Scrap is Lori Barnhurst. We got to choose 2 kits this month, I chose "Natural Chick" and "Orphan Boy". Natural Chick is full of girlie pinks and flowers. I wasn't too sure I'd use the kit but the lovely mix of deep reds, neutral browns and greens really make this a versatile kit! I think the ribbon in this kit is by far my favorite! I do seem drawn to stripes and spots. The one thing I liked about this kit was the flowers, not just one type but two. Love the flowers on the bottom layout, the cluster on the right corner comes already in the kit (.png file) and works great as an overlay! In all a beautiful kit!

Products used:
natural chick kit from Lori Barnhurst;
Grunge frame from digital scrapbook place.

Product Review - UHU adhesive

About two weeks ago I was blog hopping and found this, signed up and received my UHU adhesive last week. In my package I received the glue roller and the glue pen:
  • The Glue Roller - permanent adhesive. The UHU website says: it is acid-free and solvent free; in has a micro-dot glue pattern meaning a clean break, no stringing; bonds paper,cardboard, photos, plastics, glass; dries quickly and permanently; adjustment screw for constant tension on tape; contains 12m;
  • The Glue Pen - forumalated to dry fast and not run; pen design allows delicate glue placement; fits in narrow tool trays; strong non-toxic and washable; will not wrinkle paper
When I received the products I was delighted I got the roller, by far these products are my favorite adhesives, the glue stick I wasn't bothered either way, I knew I'd use it on projects but not as much as the roller... well thats what I thought! I used the roller on a couple of layouts and loved it, I knew I would so no big surprise there. The little dots work great and no stringy mess when you're lifting the roller off the paper. I had an altered project to do and thought I'd try out the glue stick. I will state here and now that I LOVE this stick! I used it on the altered project on paper, and cardstock. Then I tried it on a layout, on photo's, paper, cardstock, and ribbon. I am loving it! I used it on a variety of paper thicknesses and none wrinkled! That had been a major thorn in my side with other wet adhesives. The glue stick has a chisled end, just lightly squeeze the tube and just "roll" along the edge of the paper and the end smears out a layer of glue. BUT the great thing is it dries really quick! You can apply the glue, apply to the project, smooth down the edge and thats it, its dry! I think I have used it on every project since that day! I have a new favorite adhesive - The UHU glue stick! Definately recommend these to any scrapbooker!

Is it really Tuesday?

Tuesday, September 5, 2006

Not sure about you but I am TOTALLY out of it! The long weekends screw my routine up and takes me ages to get back to "normal". Anyway I got a couple of projects done over the weekend. 2 I can't share (yet) and 2 I can (1 below and the other needs photographing).

A New Direction
There has been a lot of talk on boards about the value and point of blogs. Mine is just to share my work without having my family and friends bounce all over the internet looking for my galleries :) Plus a general braindump on occassion. But the whole thing kinda got me thinking (always dangerous) and I really DO want to do something with it. Plus I got the opportunity to review some adhesive this month so I figured I'd start a product review for new things, or new to me things. Sounds interesting? Well whatever, its a reason to force myself out the box and try products I wouldn't normally! Plus I really do want to start pushing myself out of just layouts and into articles etc. And I can only do that by actually WRITING and REVIEWING products! So Product reviews coming later in September: UHU adhesive; Dreamstreet papers; 3L; winkflash; plus anything that I buy in the meantime ;)

I will leave you today with a layout done with the Crafty Keepsakes September kit! Loving the Scenic Route papers! I was never a big fan of the SR stuff but recently have begun to change my mind! Love the fall colors and the flowers! One thing that is bothering me right now about chipboard alphabets though - stop making them self-adhesive! The adhesive always dries out and I have to use glue dots anyway! I always thought it was just the Heidi Swapp ones but its not. The pressed petals (shown on this layout) were the same. Maybe it just been the heat here in So Cal? I'm guessing 100+ degree temperatures can't be good for adhesive! Anyway enough rambling here's yesterdays layout

Simply Sunday

Sunday, September 3, 2006

Its Sunday! Its a holiday weekend (labor day for you non-US people). And its boring. We currently deciding what to do about the mini van. Its chugging along with intermitent kangarooing down the road :( The mechanics can't give us a definate "oh its XYZ", it could be one of a number of things. We've looked at getting a new vehicle but can't decide on what!

I reloaded the post about simple inspirations from back in Feb. With the layout I did for the sept/oct edition of simple scrapbooks. I promise I WILL get the darn magazine scanned at some point! Been uber busy scrapbooking for scrappy chick assignments. Speaking of which the fall issue should be out soon! yeah! I got one project finished yesterday and completed another this afternoon, must get them photographed and uploaded soon!

I submitted some layouts today. I recently rearranged my folders on the computer with a "published", "available for publishing" and a "unseen" folder. Makes things much easier! And now I have to go update that cos one got picked up by Ready Set Create for their Oct/Nov edition! Yeah! Lots of calls coming up this month! Lots to work on!

I still can't beleive its September! Where did August go?

New blogger changes

I upgraded to blogger beta today! Changing things around a little. Trying a new color format as some people had said that the black template was hard to read. Haven't figured out how to add the banner back up top but I am liking the simple style and the colors! And its much easier to navigate round to change things (links etc!), loving that! Plus there is the nifty label feature to tag each post with a theme! Cool!

sunday scribblings #23

Haven't done one of these in a while, been uber busy, but here is my scribbling for "Fortune Cookie". Eventually this will be a scrapbook page, something I've been meaning to do for a while! Those close to me will know that I can be quite the doubting thomas, however a chain of events relating to us, our favorite chinese restaurant and fortune cookies that changed my mind.
We've been going to this restaurant for about 2 years. Best Chinese food ever! And its vegetarian (bonus!). You know you always go, have your tea, eat your food, crack the fortune cookie, pay and leave. Never giving it much thought. In Nov/Dec 2005 that all changed. Bob got sick. He was diagnosed with atrial fibrulation. His heart was beating totally out of whack, and he was put on numerous medications. Lots of testing was done over those weeks, and we were told by his cardiologist that if his heart didn't return to normal on its own then he'd have to be shocked into a normal rhythm. After 3 weeks of worry his heart did convert naturally.
What does this have to do with fortune cookies? Well the weekend prior to this we went out for chinese. There were three of us. Two of us got a fortune in our cookie. Bob didn't! At the time you think nothing of it, just an empty cookie. But then things happen afterwards that make you think!
And it wasn't just THAT fortune (or lack of!).
Earlier this year my scrapbooking dreams began to be realised. I got a design team, and got published by my dream publication (Simple Scrapbooks). Things just started happening. Then I remembered my fortune. I don't remember it EXACTLY but it was something along the lines of "what you have worked for will come to fruition" or something. I keep them but we've just rearranged the furniture in my scraproom and I can't remember what I did with them. Anyway I noticed that the last few were TOTALLY dead on! Which got me to thinking and yep they have all been pretty acurate! Each time I'd get a "things are coming" fortune then yep they would.
Its not science, I guess there is a lot of room for interpretation, BUT it can help with decision making. I was pondering a decision two weeks ago about a call that ends next week. Do I apply? Do I stay where I am? Do I try to move forward? All the what ifs! My fortune that weekend read "Yes do it, and with confidence!" and you know what? I think I will!

CRAFTY KEEPSAKES!
Ok the Sept kits are ready and available for purchase at Crafty Keepsakes! Loving the scenic route and 3 bugs papers together! Awesome combination! And rich fall colors too!

This layout "Addict" is a photo of my DH as a kid :) Yep that's him riding a HP sauce bottle! Those that know his addiction to HP sauce will find this amusing!

Ok this one is from the altered add-on. A blank book, with extra alpha's and embellishments, and some co-ordinating paint :) I had been wanting to do a goals journal for a while (always pushing myself) and so took this opportunity to use this kit as the colors are so rich and yummy!

TREASURES TO SCRAP!
Another bumper sponsor month at Treasures To Scrap! This months paper sponsors are Dreamstreet and 3L. Love the Dreamstreet patterned papers! I got the Bella Donna collection. Loved this "Serafina" paper! Swirls and flowers! At first I wasn't sure what to put with it, but browsing my photo collection I came across this photo of Eliza at Chris's wedding and her dress matches EXACTLY! Freaky! I also recolored the 3L photo corners (our other sponsor this month!) . Couldn't get the match right at first, so I dug out a white pen and used that as a base on the 'buff' photo corners, then added pink pen! Love it! Anyways here is the layout:

Dreamstreet paper; 3L adhesive and photo corners; scrapease rub-ons; Heidi Swapp alpha; Prima flower; MM brad; American crafts white pen; Pink marker.

SCRAPSTREET EZINE!
The September Ezine is up at scrapstreet! I have a few projects in this issue! 2 recipes, 2 in pixel place, 1 cover finalist and a card! Its JAM PACKED this month!
