Printing on the Prima chipmates stickers

Thursday, April 16, 2009

The Prima Hybrid store has coordinating digital chipmates stickers for some of the paper lines so I thought I’d do a little tutorial to show paper peeps how to use the stickers to print just one sticker at a time. There are a few ways of doing this, but I am focusing on using digital editing tools. For this tutorial I am using Photoshop CS3 but the principle should be the same in all photo editing programs.

1. First open up photoshop and the chipmates sticker sheet you want to use, in this case I opened the “Signs of spring” chipmates.

2. Add a new layer and fill with white (second layer in screenshot). Duplicate the background layer and move ABOVE the solid white layer. Using the marquee tool draw a box around the chipmate sticker you want to print.

3. Next click, select, inverse (or right click, select inverse) and the selection should be inverted so all the sheet EXCEPT the area you wish to print is selected. Simply press delete to remove the excess printing area, leaving just the green sticker and text in this example.

4. Print onto a chipmate sticker sheet, and use in your project

Physical Prima Supplies: Signs of Spring papers; Clearly IOD transparency tape #517809; Loft 18 Flowers #52005 Signs of Spring epoxy overlay stickers; Chipmates Inkjet diecut stickers Digital Prima Hybrid Supplies: Signs of Spring Chipmates
I hope this helps you to save ink, save supplies, and makes your hybrid projects easier! As I said there are other ways to do this technique so if you have any questions about the tutorial just ask!

Prima Hybrid - altered

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Going hybrid today! This week I'm using a kit from Valerie Foster which is meant for cardmaking but I used it for a calendar cover, so I guess technically this is digital recycling and I could have used it for Thursdays 'green' post :)

I have to say I ADORE the papers in this kit by Valerie! The designs are just beautiful, I've just been waiting for the right project to use them on. This project is one of those pocket/purse size calendars, I've simply added a new cover and a little of "me" to the look.

Digital Products:
Stone Rose Hybrid card kit (digital) by Valerie Foster @ Prima Hybrid; Prima Fancies #1 by Valerie Foster @ Prima Hybrid;

Physical Products:
Chipmates Inkjet diecut stickers; Chipmates chipboard shapes; Fancie flower from "the bitty bag" #506988; center kisses round 9mm #520717;

Instructions
  1. Unfold the calendar and pop the full length cover (back and front) onto your scanner, and scan @ 300dpi (this saves measuring!)
  2. Using the marquee tool drag a box 1/4" larger than the cover, open a new layer and fill with white.
  3. Open stoneose_card04 from digital kit, drag onto document and resize to fit a front cover. Use a clipping mask to form to the box in step 2.
  4. Make a copy of stonerose_card04 layer, flip horizontally and use for the back cover.
  5. Add MixedFancies_02 from digital files, adding a blending mode: color (turquoise color-picked from stonerose_card-4), place in upper right corner
  6. Print onto cardstock and let dry & cut to size. Assemble cover of calendar
  7. Open stonerose_chipmates, using marquee tool drag a box around the item you want to use, then invert selection and delete. This will avoid printing the rest of the sheet when you only want to print ONE chipmate item.
  8. Add text to tag, print onto chipmate sticker. Let dry then adhere to chipboard chipmate
  9. Adhere chipboard to front of calendar, add prima fancie and center kisses!
Tips:
  • I adhered the chipboard to the front of the calendar ontop of the plastic cover otherwise it'd be too lumpy to get into the plastic cover.
  • The top of the flower was hanging off the edge of the chipboard so I secured it with some pop-dots cut in half giving some support to the flower.
  • Print your chipmate onto paper first, then check the color/text/placement etc is correct before printing onto the sticker sheets.
Hope you like!!!

Happy Birthday Mum!

Monday, March 16, 2009

Just want to say a BIG Happy birthday to my Mum who is another year older (and wiser?) today! Happy birthday Mum! For those not in the know, my Mum lives back in England and so we have an email/web/phone relationship right now. I made her this hybrid card, and the flocked alpha I grunged up just wouldn't come out right on the photo, one of those that looks better IRL. The beige paper is more a pinky beige IRL and the alpha more beige than pink! Lol!

Digital: Beautiful Day kit by Vera Lim; Steel Toe Mary Janes by Vera Lim @ Prima Hybrid; Card template set #3 by Di Hickman;
Prima Physical Product: Center kisses ; Loft 18 burgundy 520045 ; Whispered Words flocked alphabet

Instructions
  • Reduce digital papers to 5"x5" and design digital portion of card, print and set aside to dry.
  • Make a 5"x5" from white cardstock, cut out digital card and adhere to card base.
  • Adhere flocked alphabet, flower, and center kisses.
  • For a unified look I added some chalk to 'dirty up' the white flocked alpha
Remember you can see more Prima Hybrid projects on the Prima blog every Wednesday!

Have a wonderful day Mum!

love

Prima Hybrid

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Wednesday is Hybrid day on the Prima blog, so us hybrid girls get to shine and show our stuff. New in the Prima Hybrid store this month is this "beautiful day" kit by Vera Lim. I love the colors and had to use it for a project (and probably more in the coming weeks!). This is a layout of my BFF's daughter Bella.

Digital supplies: Beautiful Day by Vera Lim ; IOD Silhouettes gem frame fleurishy small; IOD Silhouette gem strips hearts; IOD Silhouette gem alpha royal; IOD Rue 88 coordinates; All from Prima Hybrid Notepaper scanned and extracted myself
Physical Supplies: Elysee Ribbon; Center Kisses 9mm - 520717; Kisses hearts - 520694 all by Prima Marketing Inc

Quick how-to
  • Open a new document 11x8.5" @ 300dpi, drag and drop the blue floral paper, large flower and green solid from the Beautiful day kit, and the beige solid from Rue 88 kit. Add the heart strip, "C" alpha silhouette, photo and frame onto the layout.
  • Change Alpha color to green, add dark brown stroke, repeat step with rest of title.
  • Resize photo to fit the frame
  • Duplicate frame, change top layer to dark brown overlay.
  • With the green solid paper from Beautiful Day kit under the first frame duplicate, using the marquee tool 'cut out' the inner and outter sections of the frame
  • Repeat the above step with the inner section and the large floral paper
  • Using the erase tool on the beige solid from Rue 88 kit, erase all but the floral area under the frame stamp.
  • Add notepaper and journaling
  • Print layout and allow to dry.
  • Carefully cut along notepaper edge and floral edge with a craft knife, then slide ribbon through and secure.
  • Embellish with center kisses and hearts

Prima Hybrid Card - with love

Friday, January 23, 2009

Prima decided that for 2009 they would merge the two teams for hybrid and Prima, picking 5 of the existing Prima Hybrid design team to continue on for the 2009 period. I haven't mentioned this yet, but I am VERY thankful and lucky to have been chosen for a 2nd year to be on the Prima Hybrid Design Team, along with Amy Martin, Jess Gordon, Julie Ann Shahin, and Melinda Staley (such a great team, these ladies do fantastic work!). Looking forward to the year ahead with the Prima Hybrid kits and all the great things they have to offer in the upcoming year!

Part of our new responsiblities involves us creating each month for sharing on the Prima Blog, we've had our introductions, and this week saw our first blog feature, which is on the Prima Hybrid "parcel post" mini albumkit. We were asked to show uses for the kit in ways other than for Christmas, like the upcoming Valentines day or mothers day. Obviously for me this screamed CARDS!!! So I set about making a card for that special someone using the steps below.

Digital products used:
  • IOD parcel post (label and paper)
  • IOD Rue 88 coordinates (red paper)
  • Font: Bickham script pro

Physical products used:
  • Chipmates sticker sheet
  • Chipmates acrylic overlays
  • Say it in crystals swirls
  • flowers (PH tea and silk kit)
  • Center kisses
  • Elysee Ribbon

First open the label sheet from the parcel post digital kit. Highlight the label you want to use, and hide the rest or simply fill with white (remember DO NOT save over this file!). Add text greeting, and print onto the die cut Sticker sheet, then set aside to dry. Full instructions on using the Chipmates are included in the downloads :)

Create a new document 5"x5", and drag the red paper from the IOD Rue 88 coordinates onto the document. This paper coordinates really well with the parcel post kit! Open a quickpage from the parcel post kit, and resize to fit the design shown below. "Cut" out the label we used earlier and position it on the card, add text. This really gives you a feel of how the card will look later. Next print this out onto cardstock or photo paper. I chose not to hide the label layer, as I liked the scallopy edge and wanted to use it in the final design. For a cleaner look to the card, this layer could be hidden prior to printing.

Once all the printed mediums are dry we can assemble the card! I cut the card base out to 5" x 10", scored the middle, and folded it over to create the base for the card. I added the swirl crystals and lace. The printed label I wanted a 3D effect to, so I stuck onto cardstock and cut around so I could use dimensional foam adhesive underneath. I added the chipmates epoxy overlay, flowers and some center kisses gems for the finishing touches!

I'm sure you'll agree it's not my usual clean and simple design! lol! But I LOVE it! One thing I mentioned about Design Teams this week was that sometimes working with different product pushes you creatively, and I love that!

Prima Hybrid Relaunch!!!

Monday, December 1, 2008

Prima Hybrid site relaunches today!!! We've spent some time in transition figuring out our hybrid niche, balancing everything, and Prima Hybrid is now a Hybrid Kit site! If you love Prima, love digital, love hybrid, and love perfectly coordinated kits and want to blend everything there are lots of kit options available! I got to play with this beautiful kit recently called "Tea & Silk".

I'm sure you'll agree it's just BEAUTIFUL! I was trying to decide my favorite things and I seem to be drooling over one or two of the papers and the ribbons, totally YUMMY! I thought I'd share this layout I did with the kit. Not my usual style, seem to be in a creative experimental phase, but I love it!

The layout is based on my hybrid sketch below. The idea of hybrid sketches was taken from Sally and Josie at Prima, with permission. We're hoping to run hybrid sketch challenges every month, which should be fun! Incase you don't know how it works, the blue area's represent traditional supplies, pink represents digital, creating a hybrid layout! I think posting the sketch also helps identify the digital/traditional portions of the layout. All supplies for the layout are from Prima Hybrid tea and silk kit, except a couple of Prima Center Kisses in the flowers.

Blue = traditional
Pink = digital

I printed the digital portions on my new Epson Artisan 800 printer, the photo (and blue frame) is printed on Epson glossy photo paper, and the pink paper and title is printed on Canon matte photo paper. I prefer the matte photo paper to while cardstock as it gives the colors more POP than cardstock. This was my first project with the new printer and I LOVED the results! Epson really offer high quality photo printing from home!

So pop by the Prima Hybrid site, check out the kits and the inspirational projects from the flowergirls! Also remember to stop by the forums, we got it going ON this month, we have contests, challenges and prizes!!!

Tutorial: Printing Mediums

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

One of the questions I get asked most about hybrid scrapbooking is “what do you print the digital part onto?” The answer is: Anything, and everything! There really are so many options, that is the great thing about hybrid.

Obviously the choices for the beginner hybrid scrapbooker are probably going to be limited so I thought what better than a side by side comparison! The papers that almost every scrapbooker has in their supplies are: cardstock (smooth or textured) and photo paper (glossy or matte). Each one of these can be used for hybrid scrapbooking, and each gives the project a different look and finish.

  • Cardstock: I use plain white cardstock a lot for hybrid. First it’s inexpensive and second I have a lot of it. Textured or smooth depends on my project.
  • Photo Paper: I print my photo’s at home so I always have photo paper on hand. Photo paper comes in lots of finishes, matt and glossy being the two most popular.
My choice for deciding which paper to print on depends a lot on the project in question. I decided to make a hybrid card, and print it out onto different papers to compare the difference.

I printed the digital portion onto smooth cardstock, matte photo paper and glossy photo paper. The cardstock (left) gave a dull flat color and finish to the card. The glossy photo paper (right) gave the most vibrant color and detail, but in lights gave off a glare and sometimes made it difficult to see (and photograph). Falling in the middle is the matte photo paper, which really did fall between both. The colors were stronger than the cardstock, but the detail wasn’t as good as the glossy photo paper, but there was no light glare.

In this scan you can see the difference between the card on the left (cardstock) and right (glossy photo paper). The difference is much more pronounced in real life.

I’ll still continue to use all three papers, deciding which finish I‘d prefer with each project. I like the variety. Even though the cardstock gave a flat finish with duller colors, for some projects that works great, especially on grungy or heavily distressed papers. Each paper has pro’s and cons, each one is worth trying, and each one has a place in my hybrid scrapbooking!

Of course this is just about papers, not taking into account transparencies, vellums and specialty printing mediums, that's a whole other tutorial ;)

Have fun with Hybrid!

Time for another Blog Party!!!

Saturday, May 3, 2008

It's National Scrapbooking Day!!!! How could we flowergirls at Prima Hybrid not do another blog party? We know how much you all enjoyed the last couple we've done, and this seemed like a great time to bring back the templates and the blogging! So here is my contribution, an 8x8 template, available for download here. (keep reading for the other girls links below!)

And here is my sample layout. I strayed from it a little, call it creative license, lol! I love the doggy word art pack from Carrie Stephens, and the fun papers from Vera Lim. I actually used a couple of kits from Vera Lim, mostly "about a boy", and the tan paper from "one evening".

Credits: Digital Wordart: Carrie Stephens; Everything else is Vera Lim;

The point of a blog party is for blog readers to go hopping from blog to blog and picking up goodies along the way! So here is a list of all the Prima Hybrid blog party participants!

Stamping Saturday - lookout!

Saturday, March 29, 2008

As always I'm trying to include more stamps into my projects hence the stamping Saturdays! This layout was done as part of a challenge for iscrap. One of those I kept adding and taking away bits to. The version I posted over at iscrap has an extra photo and the tag in a different place, plus no stitching on the green cardstock, and honestly even though I've changed it about... I'm still not 100% happy with it...

Supplies:- Patterned paper: spring explosion, Meredith Fenwick (Prima hybrid); Solid papers: Citrus punk, Gina Miller (prima hybrid); Stickers: Autumn Leaves & Creative Imagination; ink: ranger; stamps: HOTP & Inkadinkadoo; photoshop; acrylic paint pen - marvy urchida; font: sexsmith; tab: Misty Cato; Brads: Creative Impressions;

The layout is a scraplift of Mou Saha's Lucky layout. A scraplift was part of the challenge requirements and I just love her work. Perhaps that's why I'm not 100% happy with it? I don't scraplift well. I think in the time I've been scrapbooking I've done ONE scraplift I was truly happy with!

Oh and no my dogs didn't lost their spots! This is my sister-in-laws dog Flo. A Staffordshire bull terrier, and a little minx! More trouble than my two put together!

Did you guess? The only real paper in these projects is the blue paper on the bottom of the cards. Everything else, except the chipboard hearts and ribbon, is digital and printed out on my Epson RX680. Still loving that printer!!! So very impressed with it still. I've done a lot of hybrid projects recently, that I've been sharing this month, and more to come!

Prima Hybrid Grand Opening - Blog Party!!!!

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Alright time to get down and groooove! Prima Hybrid grand opening is today, so check by the forums and see what's happening! And don't forget to pop by DST tonight for a chat with the designers and flowergirls (including me!). Anyway to celebrate the Prima Hybrid grand opening us flowergirls decided to hold a little blog party and offer some lovely blog candy, and goodies!

Here's how it works if you haven't partied before! This is my blog party gift: an 8" x 8" layout template. Now I know some of the other girls did layout templates the same size so potentially you have the makings of an 8 x 8 album! You can download my template here.

Naturally I have to do a layout to show you what you can do with this template, so here is a little 8" x 8" sample page using the first blush collaboration kit from Prima Hybrid. This is a hybrid layout. Everything except the flower and brads are digital printed onto Epson Photo paper using my Epson RX680.

Layout credits: Digital kit: “First Blush” Collaboration kit, Prima Hybrid; Flower: Prima; Fonts: Bickham Script Pro, Georgia; Misc Brads; Template by Di Hickman

Now you have to go visit Amy, Andrea, Angel, Cathy, Danielle, Jess, Julie Ann, Kristin and Melinda to grab the set! Most of us did templates, some did quick pages with Prima Hybrid Goodness, but we all worked hard to bring you some great digital goodies to use in your hybrid projects. Though you can use the sketches as-is and do a layout 100% paper too!

For details on how to use the digital templates, see my tutorial below.

The big reveal - I "got flowers!"

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I feel like a magician unveiling a magic act! lol! Anyway, cast your minds back to 30th November 2007 (yes I've been holding onto this THAT long!). I got an email from someone looking for writers for a new manufacturer venture, was I interested? Would I be willing to sign a non-disclosure to hear more details? Well DUH! I signed, and after seeing the opportunity I grasped it with both hands.

The next 6 weeks thereafter, I have been on a permanent high. I've hinted it was something big, and I wasn't kidding. You see, that manufacturer was Prima and the new venture is Prima Hybrid! A brand new site with a brand new innovative outlook on scrapbooking! Something for everyone, whether traditional, digital or hybrid, just like our ad said "you can have your cake and eat it too"!!!

Prima Marketing Inc., an industry-leading manufacturer of unique flower accents and scrapbooking materials, is about to set another trend – products that seamlessly build a bridge between traditional paper and digital scrapbooking. PrimaHybrid.com will launch on January 15, 2008, offering exclusive hybrid scrapbooking products, projects and resources that will appeal to both traditional scrapbookers and digital scrapbookers.

The foundation for PrimaHybrid.com is already in place, set to provide the hybrid scrapbooker with a variety of resources to create meaningful hybrid projects:

• Products that instantly coordinate to combine paper and digital product lines
• Step-by-step hybrid scrapbooking project examples
• Inspiring articles to help the digital scrapbooker to visualize how digital "translates" into traditional paper projects
• Tutorials to help the traditional scrapbooker cut the learning curve into learning about digital scrapbooking techniques
• A weekly newsletter to showcase newest trends and tips, such as “A Step by Step Guide to Your First Hybrid Project”

The site will also offer complete digital kits and elements created by leading digital artists such as Gina Miller, Weeds & Wildflowers Designs, Meredith Fenwick, Iron Orchid Designs (IOD), Carrie Stephens, Corinna Nielson, Dianne Rigdon, Nancy Kubo, Trish Jones, Kim Christensen, Vera Lim and Doris Castle. One of the first offerings available in the shoppe is a collaborative kit, called “First Blush” featuring creations by each of the artists.

All of you know I've been thoroughly embracing hybrid scrapbooking for a while now (even before I knew what it was!), and being selected to be on this team is like a dream come true. Me, a flowergirl! Along with fellow flowergirls: Amy Martin, Corinna Stevens, Jessica Gordon, Julie Ann Shahin, Cathy Pascual, Danielle Flanders, Melinda Staley, Denise Doupnik, Cindy Gilchrist, Kristen Tilley, Indah Permata Sari, Jamie Brewer, Andrea Gourley, Angel Hartline, Patty Debowski, Jenn Vogel, and Saxon Holt. (notice a couple of card sketch girls in there!!!)

Oh and it doesn't stop there... the news gets better! I'm the design team leader!!! To say I'm excited would be a severe understatement. Hybrid is really something I believe is the wave of the future, as it unites both traditional and digital scrapbookers. So, to be asked to lead up the creative team is just an amazing honor! I told you this was BIG!

Anyway, here are a couple of cards with the new "first blush" Collaboration kit from Prima Hybrid. It's PACKED SOLID with BEAUTIFUL patterned papers and embellishments. You'll remember this design from my sketch earlier this month.

Digital elements from the "Firsts" Collab kit! - Wordart: Doris Castle; Blue paper: Gina Miller; Ribbon: Dianne Rigdon; font: Bickham Script Pro; Traditional elements: Prima flower #170547; Brad: MM;

Another card using an old sketch of mine, but I just LOVE this design, always have. Can you see the texture in this paper? Prints out BEAUTIFULLY (especially on my new Epson RX680 printer! that thing ROCKS). I have to say I ADORE this blue patterned paper by Dianne Rigdon. Just resized it to fit the card and it just fills that space beautifully!

Digital elements from the "Firsts" Collab kit! - Blue paper: Dianne Rigdon; Pink paper: Corrina Nielsen; font: Bickham Script Pro; Traditional elements: Prima flower #170547; Brad: MM; Cardstock: Bazzill;

I've made a mini album and card too but can't share those till February as they are being published in Scrapstreet February edition. For more inspiring projects using this kit, don't forget to check out the Prima Hybrd Collaboration Kit gallery! The flowergirls have gone WILD! Also stop by the forums and take part in our first challenge, a prize drawing where you can win a copy of Scrapbook dimensions magazine. We'll be having weekly contests too, with prizes!

There are LOTS of things planned for Prima Hybrid, some of which has to stay a secret until CHA in February, but rest assured whether you are a paste eater (paper scrapper) or a pixel diva (digital) Prima Hybrid has something for YOU!

So come on and check us out!

Also don't forget to sign up for the newsletter!!!
